Helena Attlee, who has done a number of books on the history of gardens, turns her hand here to the long Italian love affair with citrus trees and fruits. Her prose is lovely, her grasp of Italian culture strong, and her eye for telling details is enviable.
The story is not strictly chronological. Attlee moves about the country and through time, following threads that link the ancient past with contemporary culture and displaying an ease with linguistic, political, and artistic history that makes one wonder how we could not have looked at Italy from this perspective before. Wonderful reading.
